Warsaw Ghetto Uprising!
Nazi Soldiers at Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was the first public uprising in German-Europe. It was lead by a Jewish Fighting Organization which was joined by the remaining ghetto population. It lasted form April 19th to May 16th 1943, making it the longest Jewish uprising of the war. The uprising was a response to the deportations from the Ghetto and the mass murders of many who had been deported. 300,000 Jews had been removed and the ghetto now had a population of 60,000 and most were young, the survivors blamed themselves for the loss of the others due to "not having offered armed resistance"(Encyclopedia of the Holocaust).
The plan to end the uprising was to liquidate the ghetto in the course of three days, as a present to Adolf Hitler for his birthday (which was April 20th). German forces numbered 2,842 men that entered the ghetto and had 7,000 security forces enter Warsaw. The battle went on for 27 days, instead of the planned three. A General had the Great Synagogue destroyed as a symbol that the Jewish portion of the Warsaw, didn't exist anymore. By May 16, hundreds of Jews were still living in the ruins. This uprising however gave hope to other Jews, by news of the brave stand. It is now a worldwide day of remembrance of the Holocaust: Yom Hashoah.
